Description du contenu de l'enseignement :

- (in class) An empirical and analytical study of conflict dynamics in the Middle East region: sectarian, political-islam related, foreign-intervention related, and political/economic conflicts. 

- (in class) Exploring and questioning notions and common ideas about violent conflicts, whether domestic or extra-national. 

- (through readings): Comparative readings that help explore the dynamics of conflicts worldwide and through time. 

Compétence à acquérir :

- A better empirical knowledge of current armed conflicts.

- A better analytical understanding of the mechanisms of political violence and the levers required for conflict resolution.

Mode de contrôle des connaissances :

- An analytical report on a documentary/film about a particular violent, political episode (15% - material provided by instructor)
- Validation of the summary of three books (no grade, but validation required to pass the class)
- Final written examination (3 hrs, series of questions on content of class and readings - 85%)
