This course provides a comprehensive introduction to key concepts in economics through four major themes. Theme 1 explores economic growth—its definitions, measurement, and global patterns—introducing GDP, income distribution, and the limits of growth indicators, as well as the main determinants of productivity such as capital, human skills, technology, and institutions. Theme 2 examines the market economy and the role of the state, covering different forms of government intervention, the justification for public spending and regulation, and contrasting liberal, Keynesian, and welfare-state perspectives. Theme 3 focuses on markets, prices, and inflation, explaining how supply and demand determine equilibrium, the various market structures, and the causes and consequences of inflation in both historical and theoretical terms. Finally, Theme 4 addresses sustainable growth and inequality, analyzing the evolution and measurement of inequalities, their relationship with globalization and development, and the environmental challenges of long-term economic growth.
